Austin - Mount Bonnell and Threadgills

Mount Bonnell is in the northwest of Austin, looking over Lake Austin. 100 odd steps up from the parking is a very nice picnic area and a set of paths looking over the lake. Right at the top of the steps is this area looking over the lake.

From here and along paths going both ways there are wonderful views of Lake Austin.

Lots of million dollar + homes out here. The lake is surprisingly placid. We only saw one or two boats while we were up there picnicing and walking the paths. There were a bunch of girls up there quacking on cell phones instead of looking at the scenery (go figure).

We went over to the original Threadgills for dinner. I first heard of it in an Amex commercial long ago. Then when I spent some time in Austin I went there for dinner a couple of times. This is a terrific place, providing down home country cooking. They also have the best veg side dishes you can find.

We had chicken-fried steak, fried catfish, salisbury steak, and pecan-crusted chicken for dinner. It was accompanied by creamed spinach, garlic cheese grits, lots of fried okra, and scalloped potatoes.
