Goat Cave Natural Preserve - Austin

Austin's underpinnings are limestone karst, subject to sinkholes, caves, and subsidence on occasion. Down in the south part of Austin is the Goat Cave Natural Preserve, a small area with several small features of this type. The features are not spectacular in presentation, but they are surrounded with lots of wildflowers. A path winds through shady live oak woods, with occasional clearings full of flowers.

Some are fairly familiar to us, some are not.

Berries abound, as well.

Cacti are small, but are now showing a bit of color.

The bright sun really showed these off well.

Others like the shade more.

There is just a ton of diversity here.

Big/small, shade/sun, succulent/not, fruits/none. This was a very enjoyable, though short, walk.

These little puffballs were out in the sun at the far end of the walk. The little folded up leaves behind the pink blossom behave like a Jamaican bush called "Shame Old Lady". When you touch them, the leaves fold up together.

We are enjoying the differences between Austin and Chincoteague/Assateague. We'll find some more and share.

  1. Enjoyed the colorful blooms, Jim. We have some of the yellow & red ones in our own wildflower garden (believe it's called Indian Blanket) and the last pink one looks like primrose. Always great to see nature's beauty!
